Letter to Chi Ch'ang
Su Shih (A.D. 1036-1101)
Sung Dynasty
Ink on paper. Semi-cursive
script. Handscroll.
27.6 x 45.2cm
Su Shih, styled Tzu-
chan, was a native of Mu-
shan in Mei-chou, Szechuan,
and received the chin-shih
degree during the Chia-yu
reign (A.D. 1056-1063). He
is generally recognized as
the foremost poet of the
Sung period and is also
highly regarded as a prose
writer. Acclaimed one of
the four great calligraphy
masters of the Sung, his
characters are noted for
their firmness and tight
composition.
