  7.      Su Shih, styled Tzu-
  8. chan, was a native of Mu-
  9. shan in Mei-chou, Szechuan,  
  10. and received the chin-shih 
  11. degree during the Chia-yu 
  12. reign (A.D. 1056-1063). He 
  13. is generally recognized as 
  14. the foremost poet of the 
  15. Sung period and is also 
  16. highly regarded as a prose 
  17. writer.  Acclaimed one of 
  18. the four great calligraphy 
  19. masters of the Sung, his 
  20. characters are noted for
  21. their firmness and tight 
  22. composition.
